Tenses Shift

lyrics

verses by ROBERT ANNIS, Chorus & Outro RWE

I passed so many people today,
but I can only remember one couple
in any significant way:
a grandmother and child.
I captured only a handful
of similar snapshots—
a splinter of their happy lives.

persisting persistence, participating
in a broken language, formulations
just won't decrease
Sifting through the pieces, tenses shift;
tensing shoulders, are getting older
the verbage vacates, a hollow voice
now gone
the only truth left is in disorder
behind the eyes of the beholder,

my off-balance eyes
can’t tell for sure if that child,
wrapped in a pale traffic-light green jacket,
too near the beginning of summer,
is a cute girl or a beautiful boy,
but there is certainty in the memory
—that child will never hold anything tighter.

persisting persistence
participating in a broken language,
formulations just won't decrease
Sifting through the pieces, tenses shift;
tensing shoulders are getting older
the verbage vacates a hollow voice
now gone
the only truth left is in disorder
behind the eyes of the beholder
